Dark site exercise
Scheduled Maintenance Report for Flying Circus
Completed
We have completed our dark site test successfully. We learned that customer applications were available reliably (so no surprising real-time interconnections between our data centers on this level).

However, we did see a few unnecessary inter-dependencies of systems that limited our responsiveness for support issues during an outage and will improve those in the future.

Scheduled
To validate our off-site backup capabilities we will perform a simulated "dark site" exercise. This will sever all connections between our primary and secondary data centers and we will switch selected customer applications with off-site backup services into secondary mode.

As this is a simulated exercise we do not expect any impact on customer applications running in our primary data center. However, we will be monitoring the situation closely.

The following secondary services might be affected temporarily during the exercise:

* Customer specified service-checks (as shown on https://my.flyingcircus.io) will not be updated.
* Chat systems (Matrix, Rocket.Chat) might not be able to log in new users.
* Our emergency hotline might not be reachable during interruption.
* Emergency emails might be delayed.
* gitlab.flyingcircus.io may will not be able to communicate with our primary data center.
* hydra.flyingcircus.io which may affect automated deployments and system updates using "fc-manage"
